Nesi Altaras

Nesi Altaras is a PhD student in History focused on Jews in the Ottoman Empire and post-Ottoman successor states. He is the author of “The Jews of Van-Urmia: Remembering Borderland Migrations (1914–18)” (Jewish Social Studies, Winter 2023) and A Privilege That Cannot Be Bought: Jews of Turkey and Citizenship Restitutions from Portugal and Spain (Libra, 2023).

Elza Niego

In 1927, Elza Niego, a young Jewish woman was stabbed to death by an older Turkish man whose romantic advances she had repeatedly refused. Her murder sparked an intense emotional reaction from Jews, which the Turkish press found unacceptable, leading to antisemitic publications and outbursts, including the arrest of nine Jewish leaders.
