Rachel Bloom combined her passion for musical theater, her gift for comedy, her feminist sensibility, and her roots in Jewish humor to create the award-winning show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2015-2019). While studying drama at New York University, Bloom was the head writer and director for a sketch comedy group called Hammerkatz, and after her graduation in 2009, she performed with the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York and Los Angeles. Her music video “F— Me, Ray Bradbury” went viral in 2010 and was shortlisted for the Hugo Award. She went on to act in a number of internet shorts and guest appearances on TV shows before releasing her first two comedy albums in 2013, Please Love Me and Suck It, Christmas. In 2015 she and co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna launched Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, a sitcom featuring original musical numbers in every episode, for which Bloom won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in 2016. The show skewered sexist tropes, as when Bloom tweeted fake casting calls for the show’s male roles, playfully objectifying actors in the ways actresses often are. She has also appeared in movies, including Most Likely to Murder (2018), The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019), Trolls World Tour (2020), Bar Fight! (2022), and The School for Good and Evil (2022). In 2020, Bloom was awarded Lifesaver Award from ELEM/Youth in Distress in Israel.
