First patients admitted to Kolkata’s Ezra Hospital
Ezra Hospital, a hospital in Kolkata established by Mozelle Ezra, admitted its first patients on April 9, 1888. Mozelle Ezra, born 1853, was the daughter of Sir Albert Sassoon, a Baghdadi businessman and philanthropist, and Hannah Meyer Sassoon. She was the wife of community leader and philanthropist Elias Ezra. She helped ease the poverty of the Jewish community in Calcutta and donated generously to synagogues in schools.
In 1887, Mozelle Ezra established the Ezra Hospital in memory of her late husband. It was open to all communities but had special provisions for Jews. She also helped to support women, children, students, and other causes in Jerusalem, as well as contributing to the maintenance of the tomb of Ezra in Iraq. Her son, Sir David Ezra (1871–1947), assumed his father's position in the community.
In this period, Kolkata was a hub of the Judeo-Arabic-speaking Baghdadi Jewish trading diaspora in Asia. During Mozelle Ezra's lifetime, the community numbered some 1,800 people. The Sassoon family, into which Mozelle was born, was one of the leading mercantile families of the community. These leading families formed an elite and amassed tremendous wealth, employed many of the members of the Baghdadi Jewish community, and ran religious and charitable institutions. The families intermarried over the generations, including Mozelle's marriage into the Ezra family, the dominant family in the Baghdadi community for much of its history.
Mozelle Ezra died in 1922. The Ezra Hospital still exists today as part of the Medical College, Kolkata.
