Rising Voices Fellows 2014-2015

Eliza Bayroff is a junior at the Schechter School of Long Island. In addition to her love of reading, Eliza enjoys dancing, movie trivia, and spending time with her two dogs. She is also an avid history buff and an obsessive fan of the musical Rent. Though she has many favorite quotes, Eliza draws the most inspiration from the words of author Margaret Atwood: "Nolite te bastardes carborundorum—Don't let the bastards grind you down."

Sophie Edelhart is a senior at the Jewish Community High School of the Bay in San Francisco. Outside of school, she serves on the San Francisco Youth Commission, a body of seventeen young people who advise the Mayor and Board of Supervisors on issues affecting youth in the city. Sophie is also a complete culture nerd, so when she's not at school or City Hall, you'll likely find her reading, watching movies, listening to podcasts, or browsing political blogs.

Ilana Goldberg is a senior at the Jewish Community High School in San Francisco. Ilana enjoys performing and watching musical theatre and learning new languages. This summer, Ilana spent seven weeks volunteering in the Dominican Republic.

Ellie Kahn is a junior at Needham High School, where she loves to take art classes, write, and play Ultimate Frisbee. Ellie is an active feminist and is so excited to be apart of the Rising Voices Fellowship for the upcoming year. In her free time, Ellie likes to spend time with her two brothers, sing, and collage.

Yana Kozukhin is a sophomore at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School. Her hobbies include writing, reading, and playing piano. She also enjoys participating in her school's speech and debate team and working as a babysitter. Yana volunteers regularly at her synagogue and in various school organizations.

Rachel Landau is a junior at Wellesley High School with keen interests in poetry, photography, piano, and political science. She enjoys passionate discussions and dislikes slow Internet connections. When she’s not working on the numerous school organizations to which she belongs, Rachel can be found practicing the French horn, reading literary magazines, or thinking about a thousand different things all at once.

Eliana Melmed is a junior at Milken Community School in Los Angeles. She enjoys long bike rides on the beach almost as much as she enjoys performing in musicals and doing dissections in biology. After school, Eliana competes with her school's swim and water polo teams, and she looks forward to each weekend when she is a counselor for two-year-olds at her synagogue. When Eliana is feeling overwhelmed, she relaxes by playing the violin, curling up with a good book, or taking out a spiral-bound journal and ballpoint pen.

Maya Sinclair is a senior at Gann Academy in Waltham. She loves studying Talmud and History as well as Hebrew. She is the editor in chief of the yearbook, very active with the school newspaper, and plays on both the basketball and cross-country teams. One day she hopes to work in a setting where she can give back to both her local community and the greater Jewish community.
