Sue Levi Elwell

Sue Levi Elwell.

A pioneer of inclusive Judaism as one of the first openly gay women rabbis, Rabbi Sue Levi Elwell helped empower countless Jewish women to take ownership of Jewish tradition. Elwell published The Jewish Women’s Studies Guide in 1987, a year after her ordination. She went on to found the American Jewish Congress Feminist Center in Los Angeles, which offered Rosh Hodesh groups and classes for women in everything from basic Jewish education to Talmud and Jewish mysticism. Elwell served as the first rabbinic director of Ma’yan: the Jewish Women’s Project, where she helped edit their feminist haggadah and lead their influential and deeply moving women’s Seders that, every year for a decade, beginning in 1994, hosted as many as 500 people on four consecutive nights. She also brought her experience to editing the Reform Movement’s haggadah, The Open Door. Among her other publications are The Torah: A Women's Commentary and Lesbian Rabbis: The First Generation.

Hello, Rabbi! My name is Sister Sue Gallagher, a member of the Sisters of Mercy in Merion, PA.
I attended the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr service at the Shrine of the Miraculous Medal. It was terrific! I specially appreciated your reflection, and I was so happy when you mentioned the Poor People's Campaign! I have been trying to connect with someone in PA for a while... unsuccessfully. Can you give me any leads? I would really appreciate your assistance.
Many thanks! and thanks for all the work you are doing!
Sue
