Carole B. Balin was the first woman to earn tenure in the rabbinical school at the New York campus of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, where she taught for two decades. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Wellesley College, Balin was ordained at HUC-JIR and earned a PhD in Jewish history at Columbia University. She was a faculty member of the Wexner Heritage Foundation, a visiting instructor at the Institute for Advanced Jewish Studies in Moscow, and a presenter on the PBS documentary, The Jewish People: A Story of Survival. Balin is co-curator of the national traveling exhibit Bat Mitzvah Comes of Age and creator/narrator of the animated short, The Click Moment: Jewish Feminism 101. An author of popular and scholarly works, she is currently completing a narrative non-fiction on shifting Jewish identities as told through the stories of Bat Mitzvah girls over the past century. As of 2020, Balin is chair of the board of the Jewish Women's Archive.
