We Believed

Diana Shklyarov discovered what it meant to be a Jew in the Soviet Union when she was denied entrance to a prestigious university. When she and her father, a retired officer in the Soviet army, protested, they were told to apply elsewhere. The incident marked the beginning of her growing lack of trust in the Soviet Union’s communist regime.
