George McFarland with Spanky Doll by Beatrice Alexander, circa 1938
"Spanky" (George McFarland) from the television show "The Little Rascals," with a doll displaying his likeness, circa 1938. Despite Beatrice Alexander's opinion that parents should not "rush out and buy dolls for boys," she clearly intended at least some of her dolls to be marketed to boys.
