Jewish New Year card, 1899.

Jewish New Year card, 1899.

Two men are sitting and reading from a book, a woman is standing with a covered plate in her hand and a boy is beside her. At the bottom of the postcard is an inscription: Shabbat night kiddush, for a new year.
The postcard was taken by a non-Jewish photographer who took a series of ethnographic photographs of Russian Jews in 1899. The series was exhibited in the Ethnographic Museum in St. Petersburg, in the Ansky collection.

In this series, staged pictures of the same people in different scenes from Jewish culture. As a secondary use of the photographs, the postcard was produced that was used as a greeting card for the New Year.
