Although Goldman herself did not write this article, the fact that she included it in the first issue of her anarchist magazine Mother Earth is good evidence of her sympathy with its content. Given their hostility to government and the state, it is not surprising that anarchists opposed the Zionist movement, whose aim was to create a state for the Jews. In the mind of the author of this article, Zionism, with its focus on nationalist goals, represented a step backwards for the Jewish people, which had traditionally produced a large number of progressive thinkers dedicated to universal justice.
