Lucien Lazare

Lucien Lazare is a member of the Committee on Righteous Gentiles at Yad Vashem and is the chairman of its Jerusalem subcommittee. He completed his doctorate in history at the University of Strasbourg in 1967 and was the principal of the René Cassin High School in Jerusalem from 1971 to 1978. He is the author of Rescue as Resistance (1996) and wrote the section on France of Yad Vashem’s Encyclopedia of the Righteous Among the Nations: Rescuers of Jews During the Holocaust.

Despite the fact that women did not hold a high status in prewar French society, Jewish women played a disproportionately large role in the French resistance against the Nazis. Hundreds of women protected their fellow Jews, especially Jewish children, from the Nazis.
