Nelly Las

Nelly Las (PhD) is an Israeli scholar specialized in modern Jewish history and women's studies. The subject of her PhD thesis was “The Impact of Zionism on French Jewry from the Dreyfus Affair to World War II (1896-1942)” (Sorbonne, Paris, 1985). She has published several articles and books on French Jewry, Zionism, feminism, and Jewish women's humanitarian commitments. Among her publications are Jewish Voices in Feminism - Transnational Perspectives (University of Nebraska Press-Studies in Antisemitism Series, 2015; originally published in French as Voix juives dans le féminisme, Paris, Honoré Champion, 2011).

White Slavery

“White slavery traffic” was an expansion of the prostitution that spread throughout the world in the first years of the twentieth century, following the massive emigration to the New World and resulting from the growing poverty and misery of European women in the age of industrialization. Jewish women were particularly vulnerable in a hostile environment, and Jewish women's organizations played an active role in the international struggle against this plague.
