Anne Kaufman

Anne Kaufman is a mathematics and English teacher at the Sidwell Friends School and a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Maryland. Kaufman received her A.B. in women’s studies from Smith College and her M.A. in English from the University of Montana. Her scholarly interests include nineteenth- and twentieth-century American women’s writers, Canadian literature, American legal history, and literature of the West.

After her daughter’s death, Maud Nathan battled grief by throwing herself into social justice work, transforming herself from a society wife into an influential social reformer. She devoted her life to leading organizations that worked to expose poor working conditions for women and children and was a tireless advocate for women’s suffrage.
