Elana Kanter

Elana Kanter was a member of the first class of women at the Jewish Theological Seminary’s Rabbinical School, where she was ordained in 1989. For the last twenty years, she has been involved in Jewish day school education, with a brief period of service as an intern chaplain at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. In 1998, she received the Covenant Award for Exceptional Jewish Educators. Rabbi Kanter currently serves as the Director of Curriculum and Instruction at the Jess Schwartz Jewish Community High School in Phoenix, Arizona, and co-rabbi of The New Shul in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Charlotte Schacht Lipsky found an unusual balance between activism and pragmatism: on one hand, a follower of the revolutionary Emma Goldman, on the other, the owner of a successful interior decorating business. In her later years, she was involved in Hadassah and the Women’s American ORT, an organization that taught trade skills to Jews around the world.
