Shmuel Thomas Huppert (Tommy) was born in Czechoslovakia in 1936. Together with his courageous mother, Hilde Huppert, he survived Bergen Belsen and immigrated to Palestine in 1945. He studied Hebrew and English Literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he wrote his Ph.D. thesis, “Exile and Redemption in the Poetry of Uri Zvi Greenberg.” He has published two novels, Beautiful Jews and The Hadji and the Engineer: In the Shadow of the Aspen, short stories, radio plays, literary articles and children’s books. He received the Ka-Tzetnik Prize for his collection of stories Grandpa Hovers Like a Heron. Until his retirement in 2001 Huppert was head of the literary programs of Israel Radio. Shmuel Huppert passed away in 2006.
