Sara Helman

Sara Helman is Associate Professor (retired) in Sociology at the Department of Behavioral Sciences, Ben Gurion University of the Negev. She earned her Ph.D. from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She has published on militarism, gender citizenship and social movements in the British Journal of Sociology, Citizenship Studies, The Journal of Political and Military Sociology, Constellations, Identities and American Anthropologist.

She is currently researching the construction of single mothers as a social category in the Israeli welfare system.

Peace Movements in Israel

Though Israel has been involved in a state of protracted conflict and in a cycle of wars since well before its establishment in 1948, a massive peace movement emerged only in 1978. Throughout the years, the various Israeli peace movements and organizations have focused on anti-militarism and electoral politics, as well as on broader cultural shifts within Israeli society.
