Tamar Marge Gubbay

Tamar Marge Gubbay was born in Baghdad, Iraq to an observant Jewish family who immigrated to Israel in 1951. In l958 she married a Baghdadi Jew from India and moved to Bombay, where she has lived since. She has been involved in all aspects of Jewish community activities there while working in the family printing business. Currently she is working on her story, Out of Iraq, and on a book about Jewish women from India, with Joan Roth of New York.

Baghdadi Jewish Women in India

Baghdadi Jews arrived in India in the late eighteenth century and ultimately formed important diaspora communities in Bombay and Calcutta. Many notable Baghdadi Indian women were involved in philanthropy, Jewish and Zionist organizations, education, and film acting.
