Dara E. Goldman

Dara E. Goldman is a professor of Spanish at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), specializing in contemporary Latin American and Caribbean literatures and cultures. Her research and teaching focus on transnational cultures, gender, sexuality, and Jewish identity in the literature, films, music, art, and other expressive forms in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean and U.S. Caribbean communities. She is the director of the Program in Jewish Culture & Society at UIUC.

Writer, translator, and activist Achy Obejas was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1956 and moved to the United States with her parents six years later. She is known for stories with characters and themes related to gender, queer sexuality, Cuban-ness, and Jewishness, as well as migration, displacement, and diaspora.
