Frieda Johles Forman
Frieda Johles Forman, author, translator, and feminist activist, was born into a Yiddish-speaking family in Vienna in 1937 and moved to the United States with her parents after the war. She attended Hebrew College, Boston, and City College, New York, earning an MA in Philosophy. Moving to Toronto in the 1960s, she established—and for two decades directed—the Women's Educational Resource Centre at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto. Her books include Taking Our Time: Feminist Perspectives on Temporality (1989); Found Treasures: Stories of Yiddish Women Writers (1994); The Exile Book of Yiddish Women Writers (2013); and the forthcoming On the Waves of Destiny: The Selected Writings of Lili Berger (University of Toronto Press). Frieda Johles Forman passed away in 2024.
