Susan Fleming

Susan Fleming is currently an instructor of writing in the Lesley University Continuing Education Program. She earned her Ed.M. at Harvard Graduate School of Education and her Ph.D. at Lesley, where she became a senior lecturer teaching children’s literature. A former primary grade teacher and editor of reading manuals, Fleming is also the author of numerous professional articles and three novels for young readers. Her research interests include gender differences in children’s writing and the lives of nineteenth-century women educators.

Margarethe Meyer Schurz

Margarethe Meyer Schurz used the training she gained in Germany to create the first kindergarten in the United States. After training under Friedrich Froebel, a groundbreaking educator, Schurz settled in Watertown, Wisconsin, where she created a German-language kindergarten that ran until World War I.
