Laura E. Ettinger

Laura E. Ettinger is assistant professor of history at Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York. She received her A.B. from Vassar College and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Rochester. Her research and teaching interests center on women and health in American history. She is the author of Nurse-Midwifery: The Birth of a New American Profession.

Working Women's Education in the United States

Although young immigrant Jewish women had always been especially motivated to become educated public-school students, the workers’ education movement in the 1910s and 1920s tried to teach workers specifically about social activism. Organizations such as the International Ladies Garment Workers Union created summer schools at colleges to educate women workers about trade unionism.
