Susan M. Chambre

Susan M. Chambré is a professor emerita of sociology at Baruch College of the City University of New York. Her publications focus on civic engagement, disease advocacy organizations, and Jewish philanthropy. Her recent books include Fighting for Our Lives: New York’s AIDS Community and the Politics of Disease and Patients, Consumers and Civil Society. Her current book project is a study of the role of disease advocacy organizations in American political culture.

Philanthropy in the United States

In the United States, Jewish women’s philanthropy generally occurred through three main types of organizations: autonomous women’s organizations, women’s organizations that included some men, and women’s auxiliaries of male-dominated groups. In recent decades, changes in Jewish philanthropy and in gender roles have influenced contemporary styles of Jewish women’s philanthropy.
