Dorothy Bilik

Dorothy Bilik (d. 1997) taught comparative literature, Yiddish language and literature, and Holocaust literature at the University of Maryland. Her publications include Immigrant Survivors: Post-Holocaust Consciousness in Recent Jewish-American Fiction and entries on Yiddish language and literature in the World Book Encyclopedia. She also contributed to Studies in Philology and Comparative Literature Studies, among other journals.

Proud, independent, enterprising, and contentious, Yente Serdatsky exemplifies the enormous difficulties experienced by Yiddish women writers in achieving recognition. Serdatsky published stories, one-act plays, and dramatic sketches in various Yiddish periodicals, and focussed on the narratives of immigrant women like herself.

Lyalya Kaufman

Lyalya Kaufman, the eldest daughter of Sholem Aleichem, is known for her writings in the Forverts, Tsukunft, and other Yiddish literary journals. Her intimate vignettes gained her thousands of loyal readers throughout the years.
