Martha Ackelsberg

Martha Ackelsberg is William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor, emerita, of Government and of the Study of Women and Gender at Smith College, where she taught courses on urban politics, political participation, the politics of wealth and poverty, feminist and democratic theory, and social movements. Her book, Free Women of Spain: Anarchism and the Struggle for the Emancipation of Women, was reissued by AK Press (2005) and has been translated into multiple languages. A collection of her essays, Resisting Citizenship: Feminist Essays on Politics, Community and Democracy, was published in 2009 by Routledge. In addition, she has written extensively on women’s activism in the United States and Latin America, on gender and public policy, on changing understandings of families, and on “gay marriage debates,” as well as on politics and spirituality, on women in Judaism, and on the place of LGBTQ people within Jewish communities.

Shulamith Firestone

At age 25, she published The Dialectic of Sex: The Case for Feminist Revolution, which brought together the dialectical materialism of Marx and the psychoanalytic insights of Freud in an effort to develop an analysis of women’s oppression that was inclusive of the dimensions of class and race.
