Daily Skimm founders Carly Zakin and Danielle Weisberg.

Carly Zakin teamed up with longtime friend and fellow journalist Danielle Weisberg to create theSkimm, a daily newsletter aimed at sparking the interest of millennials who often avoid traditional news sources. Zakin and Weisberg met while studying abroad in Rome. On her return to America, Zakin graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2008, briefly interned at CNBC in New Jersey, then worked for MSNBC and Lifetime, creating documentaries and reality television, before joining NBC’s Peacock Productions in New York as an associate producer on their news programming. There she reconnected with Weisberg, and in 2012 the pair quit NBC to create theSkimm, a daily email digest that recasts current events using conversational language, broader context, and a format that breaks stories up into smaller bytes, all geared towards how millennials digest information. Since 2012, theSkimm has grown to 250 staffers and 7 million subscribers. Keenly aware of how hard it is to change careers, Zakin founded HigherWrite in 2011 to offer resume advice and interview training to clients. TheSkimm has evolved since its inception, now offering six newsletters, three podcasts, and a mobile app. Zakin co-hosts the 9to5ish podcast alongside Weisberg.
