Sandy Eisenberg Sasso was the first woman rabbi ordained by the Reconstructionist movement, which was one of many firsts in her career. Sasso married fellow rabbinical student Dennis Sasso before graduating from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Philadelphia in 1974, making her the first Reconstructionist woman rabbi and half of the first rabbinic couple. In 1976 she became the first rabbi to become a mother after the birth of her first child, David. Sasso served as rabbi of the Manhattan Reconstructionist Congregation before she and her husband became the joint leaders of Congregation Beth-El Zedeck in Indianapolis in 1977. She retired from the congregation in 2013. A prolific writer, Sasso has written a number of Jewish children’s books, winning Publisher’s Weekly’s Best Book of the Year Award for But God Remembered: Stories of Women from Creation to the Promised Land and A Prayer for the Earth in 1995 and 1996 respectively. She has also written resources for parents and a book on midrash. As of 2014 Sasso is director of the Religion, Spirituality, and the Arts Initiative at Butler University in Indianapolis. She also works with her cohort of fellow first women rabbis from the Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox movements, speaking about their experiences.
