Marjorie Ingall’s 2016 parenting guide Mamaleh Knows Best: What Jewish Mothers Do to Raise Successful, Creative, Empathetic, Independent Children (grounded in her experiences raising her two daughters) offers a blend of empathy, ethics, and practical advice that readers came to expect from her “East Village Mamaleh” column in the Forward, which she wrote from 2002 to 2009. Ingall graduated from Harvard in 1989 and served as editor and senior writer for Sassy from 1990 until the magazine closed in 1994. She then became a freelance writer for periodicals as wide-ranging as The New York Times Book Review, Wired, Real Simple, and Ms. Magazine and was a contributing editor at Glamour. She published her first book, the playful Field Guide to North American Males, in 1997 and collaborated on several other books.
