Ethel Gladstone only joined the US Army Nurse Corps at the tail end of World War I, but her service record shows how long a war’s impact can be felt after its official end. Gladstone graduated from West Side Hospital as a registered nurse in 1916 and after signing on with the Nurse Corps in March of 1918, she was immediately dispatched to Europe as part of the Fifth Army Corps Expeditionary Force. At Evacuation Hospital 7, she cared for the enormous casualties of the Battle of St. Mihiel in northeastern France. For her efforts, she and the nursing staff were given a special commendation from Major General Summerall for bravery and devotion to duty. After the Allied victory in November of 1918, Gladstone served with the Army of Occupation at Basse Hospital 7 in Germany until 1919.
