Sara Stone’s experience of New Orleans traced back to her training as a social worker at Tulane during the Great Depression, when she remembered visiting families in the French Quarter who could not afford coal. She joined the board of the National Council of Jewish Women in 1946 and did fundraising for the Federation after WWII, but also took a hands-on role in helping Holocaust survivors arriving at the port of New Orleans recover from their ordeal and rebuild their lives. She also worked with the Jewish Children’s Regional Service, providing scholarships, Jewish education and special education to Jewish children in Louisiana. Tragically, she lost her son to cancer weeks before Katrina. After evacuating with her daughter to New York for several months, she soon returned to her beloved community in New Orleans.
