In 1967, Donna Sternberg married and moved to Baton Rouge. She and her husband were both deeply moved by the Six-Day War, and while her husband wanted to go and fight, Donna suggested they put their efforts into fundraising and activism instead. The pair soon organized the Jewish Federation of Greater Baton Rouge. Sternberg also joined the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, and as of 2015 has served on their national board for almost two decades. After the storm, Sternberg used her connections with national Jewish organizations to mobilize close to $400,000 in aid. She quickly assembled local Jewish leaders to find offices for distributing aid and offering counseling to survivors.
