On Sunday, June 5, 2011 JWA's Executive Director Gail T. Reimer was honored at the Hebrew College Commencement with the Benjamin J. Shevach Memorial Award. The award was presented by Dr. Judith Kates, Hebrew College Professor of Jewish Women’s Studies. She said:

The Dr. Benjamin J. Shevach Memorial Award recognizes the distinguished achievement in Jewish educational leadership. Dr. Shevach left an indelible mark on Jewish education in Boston. The award that bears his name is the highest award that Hebrew College bestows for achievement in the field of Jewish education. We are proud to bestow this award on Gail Twersky Reimer.

Rabbi Daniel L. Lehmann, President of Hebrew College made the following remarks.

Gail Reimer is the founder and executive director of the Jewish Women’s Archive, a pioneering organization dedicated to uncovering, chronicling and transmitting to a broad public the rich legacy of American Jewish women. The Archive emphasizes the power of new technologies to transform both our practice and knowledge of history and is nationally recognized as a unique and vital contributor to a more expansive and inclusive vision of Jewish life, past, present and future.

Gail Reimer conceived and co-edited, with Dr. Judith Kates, two path breaking anthologies of Jewish women’s writings – Reading Ruth: Women Reclaim a Sacred Story and Beginning Anew: A Woman’s Companion to the High Holy Days. This work led to the founding of the Jewish Women’s Archive in 1995. Named by the Forward, in 2001, as one of the fifty most influential Jews of the year, and by Women’s e-news in 2006 as one of its twenty one leaders for the twenty first century, she was most recently honored by Auburn Theological Seminary at its 2011 “Lives of Commitment” event. Gail, Hebrew college is proud to award you the Dr. Benjamin J. Shevach Memorial Award for distinguished achievement in Jewish educational leadership.
